Gardens to visit in and around North Dorset
recommended NDN searches: [gardens]
This is England. There are always gardens to visit. NDN's favourite local
National Trust gardens are at Stourhead and Montacute. Stourhead
takes a day to do justice to, Montacute half an hour. If you can avoid weekends,
do so.
The National Gardens Scheme
gardens open in and around North Dorset are listed separately here.
Increasingly 'Open Garden' days are offered as part of local
festivals (Gillingham, Frome).
Of the other 'occasionally open' gardens, our favourite is
Springhead. Shaftesbury Abbey Garden is also a pleasant spot and has the
advantage of being located just off the scenic Park Walk, Dorset's Rocamadour.
So is Gants Mill.
Garden centres in and around North Dorset
Is it just us or are garden centres becoming expensive outlets
for cultural tourists? What might be good would be to offer two listings - one
of 'modern' garden centres (extensive range, cafe-restaurant, everything
labelled, no bargains); and one of old-fashioned garden centres/ nurseries
(elusive staff, few labels, misfiled plants, unexpected treasures).
Nominations/ favourites please.
