For some months a group chaired by Arthur Simmonds has been promoting Fairtrade
in Shaftesbury. Their efforts reached a notable milestone on 26th April 2008
when the town was awarded Fairtrade Town status. Press release:
Shaftesbury awarded
Fairtrade town status.
The Fairtrade
Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an
independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are
getting a better deal.
The Shaftesbury group have been encouraging local people, businesses and
organisations to pledge to use and support Fairtrade goods, and will be listing
retail outlets in Shaftesbury which sell Fairtrade goods in a Shaftesbury
Fairtrade Directory.
