Our music critic Orpheus writes:-
Duncan Honeybourne's recital on the organ of the Gillingham Methodist
Church's newly restored organ last Saturday was greeted with the
enthusiasm which has become a hallmark of this series of concerts.
Undeterred at having to follow in the footsteps, or should one rather say
"pedal steps" of virtuoso Carlo Curli who thrilled us with the previous
recital in the series, Duncan treated us to a wide ranging programme which
skilfully exploited the range of the instrument's colours and dynamics.
The regular band of Gillingham organ cognoscenti were not disappointed in
their expectations.
For this correspondent ,it was the Bach which was most enjoyable but
Honeybourne was equally at home elsewhere. Not least satisfying for him
must be the fact that this concert was enjoyed by all without the
disastrous extraneous "noises off" which so marred his lunchtime recital
given in the marquee at last year's Gillingham Festival to the
accompaniment of revving engines in the car park, bottling up in the bar
and the bowsers emptying the temporary toilets! Had such noises been
present on this occasion, then at least Duncan would have been able to
retaliate with a judicious opening up of the swell pedal. It was good to
see him back in Gillingham again and we look forward to his next visit . .
